GRAND OPENING for "Acquarella: After the Apocalypse

My first full-sim immersive art creation, "Acquarella: After the Apocalypse," opens on Saturday, October 29, 12 -3 PDT, on Jeri Rahja's Nexus Central sim in InWorldz. Enjoy music by Chandra Deed noon to 1:30 pm PDT and Declan G 1:30 - 3 pm PDT. Feast on sushi, ride a pink seahorse, come see a story as told by a sim!

The installation is based on "Acquarella: The Fable," a machinima written and staged by Alizarin and filmed by Chantal Harvey. The machinima was shown at the World's Fair in Shanghai in September and October 2010 under the auspices of Aino Barr/Christina Garcia Lasuen.

The sim has been terraformed into four containers, and this InWorldz version of the story is told in four parts, one for each of the quadrants.

The first quadrant depicts a time when The Age of Man has ended in a blaze of fire, famine, and warfare.

In the second, the Age of Acquarella dawns. The mighty goddess begins to repopulate the seas with outposts of aquariums filled with creatures that survived in the cool depths of the oceans. Hoping to avoid the violent excesses of her forebears, she plans for these mini-oceans to be peaceful and pure, hence colored only with the purest of colors, black and white.

Alas, as they say, if you want to make the Devil laugh, make plans. The third quadrant shows one of our aquariums as a dead zone, all the life squeezed out of it by the goddess's rigid reliance on purity.

At last the goddess softens her ideas, and the fourth quadrant blooms in a burst of color and fecundity. There are fanciful plants, brilliant fish, pink seahorses, showers of multicolored diatoms, masses of ikura eggs, and dance balls everywhere. It seems like paradise, but there is a hint of the sinister in the sushi pavilion, where it appears that the aquarium has succumbed to cannibalism. Even more sinister is the black spy monster lurking out of sight overhead and manipulating destiny to travel full circle like the merry go round that marks the passage back to the disaster quadrant. In the end the story of the sim asks whether moral progress is possible.

I am a digital artist in Real Life and I used the following RL software in the creation of the work: Corel Painter (digital drawing/textures), Photoshop (textures), Blender (sculpties), and Audacity (sound). I also relied heavily on my experience with virtual tools, including prim editing, texturing, and script modification. The sim was begun in February 2011 and finished eight months later. Although bits and pieces may make it to other grids, "Acquarella: After the Apocalypse" in its entirety is unique and always will be to Nexus Central in InWorldz.

"Ophion's Egg" won First Prize in the 'Inspired by Mythology' Art Contest at Haveli Gallery

I am honored to announce that my "Ophion's Egg" was awarded First Prize in the 'Inspired by Mythology' Art Contest on view at Haveli Gallery from May - June 2011. Haveli is located in Shekhawati, a beautiful sim - well worth a visit! - dedicated to the art, culture and architecture of India and the South Asian sub-continent. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Shekhawati/190/158/23 The contest was judged by Asmita, Audrey Cresci, and Hiawatha Runningbear using an ingenious art-rating device devised by GeeJann Blackadder.

My artist statement about "Ophion's Egg:"
"In the beginning Eurynome, the Goddess of All Things, rose naked from Chaos, but found nothing substantial for her feet to rest upon, and therefore divided the sea from the sky, dancing lovely upon its waves. She danced toward the south, and the wind set in motion behind her seemed something new and apart with which to begin the work of creation. Wheeling about, she caught hold of this north wind, rubbed it between her hands, and behold! the great serpent Ophion. Eurynome danced to warm herself, wildly and more wildly, until Ophion, grown lustful, coiled about those divine limbs ..." -- Robert Graves

Ophion mated with Eurynome. In the form of a dove upon the waves, she laid the Cosmic Egg and bade him to incubate it by coiling seven times around until it split in two and hatched "all things that exist... sun, moon, planets, stars, the earth with its mountains and rivers, its trees, herbs, and living creatures." Then Ophion and Eurynome dwelt on Mt. Olympus until Ophion's boasting led Eurynome to banish him to the darkness below the earth.

Robert Graves in his book The Greek Myths (ISBN 0-14-017199-1) imaginatively reconstructs this Bronze-Age Pelasgian creation myth.

"Ancient myth has always provided fertile ground for artists and theorists of the visual. However, current writing on contemporary art is, with few exceptions, curiously devoid of mythological content, despite demonstrable interest in myth on the part of several contemporary artists, ranging from earlier figures such as Louise Bourgeois and Cy Twombly to more recent arrivals such as Gregory Crewdson, Fred Wilson, Bill Viola, Ann Hamilton, and John Currin. I would also like to mention the two pieces that most interested me. Artee (Artistide) has a geometric called AD_GrandeMain (Big Hand) clawing it's way out of the ocean. Disembarking from it like an endless stream of immigrants are particles of Artee's avatar ( I think they are particles) - very clever! Mimo Vacano, someone I am not familiar with, has 5 Kaleidoscope builds that do beautiful morphing textures reminiscent of early Glyph Graves, a real pleasure to look at. Thank you, Mimo!

Requiem for Fukushima Daiichi Machinima

A machinima about my immersive art installation "Requiem for Fukushima Daiichi" has just gone up on YouTube. Made in collaboration with my husband, Alfred Ajami, it documents the art, a dramatic build of sinister beauty inspired by the nuclear catastrophe in Japan.

You can read a thoughtful post titled "Hope in Art" by the incomparable Persia Bravin here http://www.chromeneversleeps.com/ Something else auspicious just occurred to me - my "Requiem" is installed in Tenshin-En, my virtual Japanese garden modeled on a RL Japanese garden at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The name, engraved in Japanese characters on the wall behind the stage, means "Heart of Heaven." So the nuclear disaster is cradled in the peace and beauty of the Heart of Heaven.

Requiem for Fukushima

Virtual art world patron Jeri Rajha asked me to turn part of the sim I am developing for her into a piece of Immersive Art and set it for sale to help support the fees for my sim. So - "Requiem for Fukushima" was born. It is available both in InWorldz and Second Life. I will release it in SL on Saturday, April 30, in the Sky Sculpture Garden at Atelier Alizarin. All are cordially invited to drop in anytime. I will be posting studio hours via group notices throughout the month of May when I will be available to welcome visitors. The first studio hour will be Saturday, April 30, from 2 - 3 pm.

"Requiem for Fukushima" is a dramatic build of sinister beauty inspired by the Fukushima catastrophe in Japan. Housed inside a pyramid shell, it contains lurid plants, flames, billowing black smoke, and burning cinders. Even the rocks are glowing. Max your particle count!

The quadrant of the InWorldz sim that is the source of the imagery portrays a post-apocalyptic ecological disaster scene, which the Fukushima catastrophe so completely embodies in RL.

The build is 30 x 30 x 30 meters and 145 prims.

Once visitors have toured "Fukushima," they are invited to enjoy the surrounding Sky Sculpture Garden, modeled on a RL Japanese Garden, or to use the TP boxes to visit other Atelier Alizarin features: Immersive Art, Musical Kinetics, Orfeo's Oratorio, The Particularium, RL digital drawings; digital collages; Chez Ali, Alizarin's store, and on the ground, a beautiful valley nestled against steep coastal mountains.

Acquarella: After the Apocalypse on Treet.tv!

The Acquarella saga continues. It's latest incarnation is on a sim in InWorldz loaned to me by virtual art patron Jeri Rajha, where I am retelling the story in 4 sections. Yesterday Jeri and several of her artists, including me, were interviewed by Saffia Widdershins and Elrik Merlin for Treet.tv's "Designing Worlds." The interview, episode 120 from March 21, 2011 can be watched here: http://treet.tv/shows/designingworlds My segment starts at the 31 minute mark.

I have divided the sim into four sunken rooms or aquariums that will depict the story in four stages. This interview covered the opening scene:it is set after the ecological-apocalypse; the earth is in ruins. War, pollution, over-exploitation of resources, and the creation of toxic waste have left even the ocean floor in flames. Black smoke billows and flaming sparks rain down. The charred plants are lit with a lurid light. Dive klaxons and explosions break through the roar of crackling flames.

The Mysterious Forest_Open Studio

On approach, your avatar magically disappears into the trees. The world grows ominously dark. The body-snatching moonbeam whispers TOUCH ME. Ghostly voices wail; an invisible man paces, leaving fading foot prints; an owl hoots amid a chorus of other forest calls. Eyes glow from the bushes. Spiders dangle, and swarms of bats swirl out of the trees. Totemic forest animals loom from the shadows and vanish like dreams. **Please touch!** In addition your eyes and ears, THE MYSTERIOUS FOREST interacts with your avatar physically. There are lots of animations: Sits, Marshmellow-toast; Sleep; Trapped (dare you to click on the spiders!); not to mention the mischievous moon. Look out for those creepy feelers under a rock! A beheaded snake - still poisonous? - twitches and rattles when you walk by. Evocative of the artist's childhood experiences camping, part of this build appeared in the Interactivity Collaboration at Caerleon Art Collective, but much has been added that's new.

"The Mysterious Forest" is 20 meters high and 40 meters in diameter, and, at 174 prims, one of my larger immersive art environments. The imagery is based on my digital drawing "Anza Borrego Oak."

About Ophion's Egg:
"In the beginning Eurynome, the Goddess of All Things, rose naked from Chaos, but found nothing substantial for her feet to rest upon, and therefore divided the sea from the sky, dancing lovely upon its waves. She danced toward the south, and the wind set in motion behind her seemed something new and apart with which to begin the work of creation. Wheeling about, she caught hold of this north wind, rubbed it between her hands, and behold! the great serpent Ophion. Eurynome danced to warm herself, wildly and more wildly, until Ophion, grown lustful, coiled about those divine limbs ..." -- Robert Graves

Ophion mated with Eurynome. In the form of a dove upon the waves, she laid the Cosmic Egg and bade him to incubate it by coiling seven times around until it split in two and hatched "all things that exist... sun, moon, planets, stars, the earth with its mountains and rivers, its trees, herbs, and living creatures." Then Ophion and Eurynome dwelt on Mt. Olympus until Ophion's boasting led Eurynome to banish him to the darkness below the earth.

Robert Graves in his book The Greek Myths (ISBN 0-14-017199-1) imaginatively reconstructs this Bronze-Age Pelasgian creation myth.

The Winter Bear @ Pirats!

My immersive art build "The Winter Bear" has just been installed in a snowy landscape that I built at Pirats Art Network Omega this weekend, along with the digital drawings of the totem animals that appear inside as particles. The opening reception will be Tuesday, December 21 (the winter solstice!), at 1:30 pm PST.

I decided to recycle a favorite set from the RL play, "The Winter Bear" by Anne Hanley, as one of my Immersive Art bell jars. The scene happens in the middle of a blizzard with temperatures so cold that hoar frost crystals form spontaneously in midair. The spirit of the Winter Bear reigns over all, while totem animal images populate the wind. Spruces and snowcapped boulders surround the cave from which the bear broke its hibernation to meet its fate. If you take the pose ball inside, you can recapture the last few peaceful moments of the doomed animal's life.

The Winter Bear

Another fun crossover project! I recently constructed Second Life sets for a Real Life play, The Winter Bear, that will premiere in Anchorage October 29, 2010. My machinima of the SL sets will be projected on a cyc (cycloramic backdrop) as a major component of the RL stage.

The sets feature my digital drawings, done with Corel Painter and a Wacom tablet, and my Second Life building skills, including sculpties (unique 3-D shapes created in Blender) , scripts (code), and particles (temporary phantom images) which I also use to make virtual Immersive Art.

about THE WINTER BEAR
Written by Alaska State Writer Laureate Anne Hanley and directed by Jayne Wenger. Troubled Athabascan teenager Duane “Shadow” David is considering committing suicide when he’s sentenced to cut wood for elder Sidney Huntington. It’s only by combining the elder’s knowledge of old hunting ways with the boy’s expertise in video games that they stand a chance against a marauding Winter Bear. The Winter Bear delivers a message of hope that a young man can become a leader by using the wisdom of his traditional culture to transcend the traumas of his past.

Previews of the play in Galena and Fairbanks were enthusiastically received, and I am very excited to be flying to Anchorage for the official premiere.

"Acquarella: The Fable" showing at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai now!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that my digital and virtual art is now on view at the World Expo in Shanghai!

Chantal Harvey brought her awesome machinima skills to filming "Acquarella: The Fable," and I did the story, storyboard, art, set, costumes, props management, direction, production, and acted the part of Acquarella. The parts of the three Nymphs were acted by soror Nishi, BridgetMarlane McDonnell, and Yman Juran. The sophisticated and lovely Chinese narration (in Mandarin) was translated from the English and performed by Wei Yin. Our collaborative effort is now showing in the Air Tree Exhibit in the Madrid Pavilion of the World Expo in Shanghai, curated by Spanish curator Cristina García-Lasuén (Aino Barr in Second Life), founder of the virtual arts group Open This End.

RED MOON RISING: A Summer Garden Party

The August full moon is sometimes known as "The Red Moon," and it seems an auspicious date to celebrate the completion of my new Sky Sculpture Garden with a summer garden party for my friends and art lovers. Please visit me on Tuesday, August 24, at 2 pm PDT. Frilly gowns? Straw boaters? Flower avatars? A L$5,000 Atelier Alizarin Gift Certificate goes to wearer of the costume that best captures the spirit of "Summer!" Judges: Chrome Underwood, Maeve Eiren, and Thirza Ember!

The party will open with Miso Susanowa performing traditional japanese dance on the main stage/dance floor. She will continue to perform throughout the event in spots around the build. Free parasols and walking sticks! Recommended enviroment settings: sunrise or sunset.

The Sky Sculpture Garden, which is full of lush plants, stones, moss, and gravel, is inspired by a real Japanese garden called "Tenshin En." It's main feature is a "dry waterfall" on the east wall. The walkways are decorated with festive paper lanterns, and strollers will hear soft fragments of Japanese flutes, drums, and a koto. There are viewing benches for sitting and surveying the scene, and at the west end there is a dance floor and dance ball with animations to match the flamenco and classical guitar land music. Champagne and petit fours for your virtual hunger and thirst.

The Sky Sculpture Garden was built at the suggestion of some of my friends that I make a demonstration of how people might display my work on their own land. So the center island features my recent art environment, "At the End of the Day" - wander inside and you will find yourself transported to another world!

"Acquarella," a documentary machinima about my one of my virtual immersive art builds, is now up on Youtube!

"Acquarella" is a machinima documentary about my Second Life (R) immersive art build by the same name. I did the filming, and Cobalt Zeplin/Alfred M. Ajami did the editing and sound remixing.

When I was a child, I kept an aquarium and I would stare into it for hours, mesmerized by it then as I am now by Second Life, a magical weightless world also populated by strange and beautiful creatures. These memories were the inspiration behind the creation of "Acquarella." An aquarium on a cosmic scale, "Acquarella" is filled with swaying, lacey aquatic plants, schools of neon tetras, animated angelfish and goldfish, drifts of diatoms, and huge green lily pads that bob up and down in the invisible current. The build echoes with the songs of whales. Pose balls invite people to swim to their music, and throughout, there are traces of an untold story. A fragment of a submarine that torpedoed itself hints at an apocalyptic destruction that could possibly be a metaphor. Who is hunting whom with those ghostly sonar pings? Why does color sometimes creep into a largely monochrome vision? How to explain the fact that the black and white tetras school, while their rainbow-hued counterparts are solitary? Who is Acquarella? Is she a giantess or are we liliputian?

"Acquarella" employs highly-detailed digital drawings done with Corel Painter software and a Wacom tablet. It uses scripts, animations, and sounds to provide an immersive art experience that is intended to create visual and psychic pleasure for the participant.

"At the End of the Day" (ATEOTD) is based on a view of an actual place in the village of Round Pond in Maine (USA). Follow the link http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=43.947371,-69.455201&z=18&t=h&hl=en or touch the Google Maps screen shot just outside of the build to load the web site.

I have spent all or part of every summer inRound Pond, and the build reflects my feeling for the beauty of warm, moonlit June evenings. You approach through a dark forest of lupines. Once inside, you find yourself in a moonlit clearing. Lush fields of blooming lupines sway in the evening breezes. Hylas below and bats overhead keep up a constant chorus of small noises. Occasionally, the calls of a loon and a whippoorwill are heard. Once in a very great while, the evening calm is split by the screech of car tires as some teenage boy lays yet another intricate patch on the black top overtown.

There are poseballs so that people can sit and stir the water with their feet, and some tinies sits, also. The pose balls glow green on and off in a way that is reminiscent of fireflies, as are the little floating green particles. Other things to notice are the way the water in the cistern sparkles and gently washes up and down, the smoke drifting up from some of the chimneys, the lights that go on and off in some of the houses, and the patchy ground fog that hovers over parts of the field.

The reference photo that was used to create the original digital drawing is displayed nearby, along with the Google Maps screen shot, an aerial photograph of the site, and an SL version of the RL drawing. The drawing is of the same name as the build and is available in RL at http://www.marthavista.com/dayfornightshow.htm. It was done just like a traditional pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing except that I used digital tools, including a software program called Corel Painter and a pressure-sensitive Wacom digitizing tablet and stylus. All of the textures in the build were drawn with this software or in Photoshop.

ATEOTD uses scripts, animations, and sounds to provide an immersive art experience that is intended to create visual and psychic pleasure for the participant.

Other Atelier Alizarin Attractions include: Orfeo's Oratorio, musical kinetics and more immersive art in Sky Studio, The Particularium on the third floor, RL digital drawings on the second floor, 2-D digital collages on the first floor, and a beautiful sculpture park on the ground.

About "The Mysterious Forest:"
The subject of this machinima is a large-scale piece of immersive art that I did as a member of The Caerleon Artists Collective "Interactive Collaboration." The textures are all adapted from my digital drawing "Anza Borrego Oak." Artistide Despres was the project leader, and the Caerleon Sims in SL are hosted by Georg Janick/Gary Zabel, professor of philosophy at UMass, Boston, founder of the Virtual Artists Initiative, and organizer of "Through the Virtual Looking Glass" show (see my previous post). I filmed the footage using Fraps and a Space Navigator mouse and the AV production and SmartSound (R) remix were done by Alfred M. Ajami.

About MOCA:

About Alizarin Goldflake:
Alizarin is Martha Jane Bradford's avatar's name in the virtual worlds of Open Life, Open Sim, Reaction Grid, and, primarily, Second Life (SL). There I specialize in making immersive art, so called because it is meant to be experienced from the inside. Many of my sculpture are 3-D reinterpretations of my digital drawings. I create my work using the 3-D building tools of SL to shape the component objects, called prims; to texture them using images I draw with Corel Painter and/or manipulate with Photoshop; and to animate them with SL programs, called scripts. Most of my builds include sounds that I record myself or download from the internet and then remix using Audacity and also particles, which are phantom, temporary images that I draw with Painter.

Through the Virtual Looking Glass: A Mixed Reality Exhibition of the Art of Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds are computer generated, immersive, three-dimensional environments that allow people from around the globe to interact with one another through "avatars" (digital bodies) and to shape their environments, both individually and collectively, by using graphical and programming tools.

A Taste of Second Life comes to the Cahners ComputerPlace at the Museum of Science, Boston

As Alizarin Goldflake, Second Life(R) avatar of Martha Jane Bradford, I am designing a digital-virtual art exhibit for the Cahners ComputerPlace at the Museum of Science, Boston, in real life. The exhibit will further visitors' understanding of digital image creation and manipulation (http://www.marthavista.com/). It will also introduce people to the idea of making virtual art. The physical design of the exhibit will be an immersive installation employing sound and video projection to simulate the experience of being inside one of the immersive art environments that I create in Second Life.The Museum is currently accepting applications for a Technical Designer Internship for this exhibit: http://www.mos.org/visitor_info/about_the_museum/internships&d=4367. The designer will research the technology and equipment best suited to realize the artist's vision, culminating in a technical design for the project.

The picture above shows the latest SL mock-up of the design for the exhibit's visitor-interaction area. The kiosk in the center is an easy interactive - it allows the visitor to select various colored underpaintings for an upper layer containing a black-and-transparent digital drawing comprised of lines and tones.

The kiosk on the left provides the visitor with graphic elements to assemble into a finished digital collage, introducing the aesthetic decision-making process.

The most difficult interactive on the right will allow the visitor to experiment with a digital drawing program and with a virtual reality environment, using Open Sim local.

The backdrop to the kiosks is a video of Alizarin's SL immersive art, "The Maze," and it is framed by panels displaying two of her digital collages. The mock-up of this proposed visitor-interaction area can be found in Second Life at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lie/205/175/1201

The overall proposed exhibit, “Digital Art – Martha Jane Bradford,” may also include some or all of the following: a display of framed digital drawings with wall text explaining various aspects of creating digital drawings and collages, framed SL photos of Alizarin's immersive art, LCD screen presentations, videos of virtual art displays in Alizarin's SL studio, pod casts, video casts, and live demonstrations. An introduction to virtual reality via Open Sim is also being considered.

About the Cahners ComputerPlace: "Glimpse the Future; Encounter Cool Stuff; Engage Computers, Robots, Communications; Inspire Active Learning; Talk Tech with People." "The Mysterious Forest" documents my contribution to the Interactive Collaboration of the Caerleon Artists Collective. Artistide Despres was the project leader, and the CAC is hosted in Second Life by Georg Janick/Gary Zabel of UMass, Boston. I did the filming, and Cobalt Zeplin/Alfred M. PARTY to celebrate my NEW SKY STUDIO

I will host a party celebrating my new sky studio on Saturday, Saturday, March 20, 3 pm PDT.

The studio features 6 square galleries for Immersive Art best suited to midnight and two oblong galleries for work best seen in daylight. Each major build has its own dedicated space, but because of the way the doorways between galleries are offset from each other, glimpses of other art invite exploration. Although the studio is now consolidated on one floor, it actually consists of many more square meters.

Immersive Art is the featured genre, but many builds are flanked by the RL drawings that were their inspiration (available in RL at http://www.marthavista.com). A case in point," Acquarella" is surrounded by The Big Pixels drawings recently shown at PiRats.

In the center of the new sky studio is an atrium with an elaborate grillwork dome. The visitor area, with seating, champagne, candles, flowers, and teleporters, is situated below. The gorgeous tropical plantings are courtesy of Juanita DeHaro's WATER,PONDS, RIVERS, WATERFALLS in Svidler.

The land music, classical guitar and flamenco as always, is provided by an iRadio Tunie HUD, available from Zenvendof Zeno, and goes really well with the salsa animation in the dance HUD.

Nazz has developed consummate skills as an interviewer, and although our conversation flowed naturally and spontaneously, I feel the interview thoroughly covered the all important aspects of my virtual art.

This was Nazz's 299th post on his blog "Lane's List: Nazz Lane's List of the ordinary and extra-ordinary people and places in the metaverse we call SL." He is a prolific prose artist, writing for many SL media and the author of a novel in-progress about Second Life titled "Borders of our lives." I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter!

About Hermione: from January 2008 to the present I have been working in a direction that is entirely new for me, constructing digital collages out of sections of my digital drawings using a creative approach I discovered in Second Life. The method is similar to process art in that the final image is not envisioned at the outset but emerges as a result of assembling, layering, and composing visual elements.

The physical presentation of the collages was inspired by Japanese art, specifically paintings which are displayed as hanging scrolls called kakejiku. The collages are printed in separate panels on Epson canvas with an Epson 4000 ink jet printer. The panels are varnished and then glued together to complete the image. The wall hanging is constructed with a pockets for hanging rods, and the finished art is meant tobe displayed unframed.

The digital drawings that are the source material for the wall hangings are drawn just like traditional charcoals, lithographs, or pastels except that I use digital tools, including a software program called Corel Painter 10 and a Wacom digitizing tablet and stylus. I create a file of the right size and resolution to produce the final image desired and select a paper texture, a brush-tool such as “Charcoal” or “Flat Pen,” and a color. As I draw, the tablet and stylus electronically translate the motions of my hand into virtual brush, pencil, or pen strokes which I can see on my monitor real-time. I do small, limited editions of the finished drawings using archival inks on fine art rag paper. On the splash screen of my web site (see the links below), there is a downloadable PDF that explains in detail how to do a digital drawing.

The "Day For Night" Show at the Art Conservatory

A show of hanging scrolls and new digital drawings by Alizarin Goldflake will open on Saturday, January 23, at 3 pm PST in The Art Conservatory.

This is a show of many Firsts. It is the Grand Opening of The Art Conservatory at Sapphos Commons, featuring RobertSteven Smythe (of Artemisia fame) as the curator. All of Alizarin's digital drawings are seen in Second Life for the first time. And also for the first time, all of the work inside the Conservatory will be avaible in Real Life at http://wwwmarthavista.com/dayfornightshow.htm

Centerpiece of the digital drawing installation on the second floor, the "Day for Night Series" consists of scripted images that change their time of day before the viewer's eyes. These four variations on a an image are of a summer cottage overlooking a wildflower meadow, with a glimpse of the ocean in the distance. They come from a RL series of digital monoprints in which the black & white drawing is constant throughout the two dozen prints, while the color is unique to each individual print. The four scripted drawings are accompanied by a selection of four new non-scripted images.

Alizarin's hanging scrolls are on display downstairs (also outside in the park as wind-interactive banners). These scrolls represent an RL direction that is recent for the artist and uses a creative approach she discovered in Second Life. The physical presentation of the collages was inspired by Japanese art, specifically paintings which are displayed as hanging scrolls called kakejiku.

Lastly, Alizarin's popular "Metempsyche's Garden" graces the pond outside where boaters can mingle with the giant white particle drawings blowing in the SL wind. Exit from the other door and you will come across the artist's "Sunrise Sunset."

Once there was a Princess who would never take a bath.

“Please,” said the Queen.

“No,” said the Princess.

“You can have bubbles,” offered the King.

“No thanks,” said the Princess.

“She is filthy,” whispered the servants.

So, the King called in his wisemen and said, “ Please think up a plan.”

The wisemen hired a carpenter to build a fine aquarium, with jewel sprinkled sand and plants with lacy leaves. The royal chemist poured in water from the clearest, purest well, and ordered fish in all the rainbow colors. Then the Royal Wizard cast a magic spell upon the Princess, so that when the Queen said, “Time for a bath,” the Princess turned into a tiny mermaid, and the Queen picked her up and plopped her into the aquarium. “Whee,” said the princess, as she dove and splashed and swam. But, when the Queen said, “Time to get out now,” the princess said, “No!”

“Please,” said the Queen.

“No thanks,” said the princess.

“She will drown,” sighed the servants.

So the King and Queen called in the Wizard and said “Send us in, too.” And the Wizard cast a magic spell and plopped their tiny bodies in the water and they dove and splashed and swam.

“Time to get out now,” cried the servants.

“No, it's beautiful here,” exclaimed the Queen.

“Come home right this minute,” called the cooks.

“No, it's peaceful here,” shouted the King.

“They will starve,” warned the Wisemen.

But the royal cooks cooked food for them and ground it up and dried it and sprinkled it in the water where the royal family waited.

“How about roast beef? said the King.

“Send us peaches,” begged the queen.

“ I want chocolate,” said the princess.

And one young kitchen helper, whose name was Acquarella, heard the Princess ask for chocolate and threw in a whole candy bar which crushed to death the King and Queen and Princess.

"Oh no," said the wisemen.

"Alas," said the wizard.

"I'm sorry," cried the kitchen helper.

But the aquarium was built so sturdily that even after all these years, you can see a piece of the chocolate bar and hear the voices saying “Pleeeeease” and “Noooo.”

Nettrice, I take your point. First an observation, and then permit me to push back on the second clause of your closing sentence.

If we take the Coulter-Smith forecast as normative, then the medium’s evolution, just shy of five years, is astounding.

As to the assertion “can really only be experienced in-world”, let me ask you to imagine applications for technology already at hand that will bring the “in-world” experience of the virtual world out into the, shall we call it, actual world.

It is now possible, albeit in a temporarily primitive way, to create a personal, Imax-like environment for 3-D video and hence for full-motion virtual art. Put together penta-prisms, beam splitters, digital light projectors and hemispheric mirror surfaces and digital art can be personalized, as well as shared with others off-line. For a hint on how this can be done, you can imagine the virtualization of 3D and 4D art within some variation of Luc Courchesne’s panoscope (http://www.panoscope360.com/), in spatially immersive displays(http://www.hitl.washington.edu/projects/knowledge_base/hmd.html) or in any one of the enveloping projection environments pioneered by Paul Bourke (http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/miscellaneous/domemirror/mirrordome/).

I submit that for virtual, immersive art to fully take root, it must cross over and hold its own within the same space and in front of the same audiences, public and power-elite, that currently only experience legacy art (if any art at all). That is the premise that I have adopted as a starting point for working the technology, and it provides a practical, common ground for scientists and artists to collaborate on.

Alfred, this issue has been bandied about and debated, both in-world and in real life for a while now. Can the “in-world” experience be brought out into the actual world? Of course and it’s already happening. Several SL artists have done Mixed Reality shows and Brooklyn Is Watching, a show I mentioned in my write-up, is an example. The debate rests on the purpose and intent of the artist and the form of art he or she creates in virtual 3D space. Some works are clearly, intentionally meant to be experienced in Second Life, for example, and any attempts to bring the work into material space would somehow lessen the impact or experience of being immersed in the work (as an avatar).

Plasticity or the synthesis of virtual and real art bends the rules of how we define reality and how artists create images/objects. One of the qualities of immersive 3D art that would be difficult to re-create or simulate in material space is flight. DC’s Tower of Light is hundreds of meters tall. SL artists are encouraged to push and revise the fundamental constructs of plasticity through the use and control of the avatar. The plasticity of the brain replaces real life action with avatar movement to create real feelings of flying or falling while in virtual 3D space.

Of course this experience could be simulated using various devices but some might ask: What is the point of doing that in material space? Wouldn’t it take more time and resources (money) than in virtual 3D space?

"Creating on the Social Web" by Nettrice Gaskins, a most welcome and insightful article about Second Life art, appeared yesterday on art:21 ("art in the twenty-first century"), a PBS art news blog. Featured artists include DanCoyote Antonelli, Bryn Oh, Maya Paris, Alizarin Goldflake, and Vu Sosa in that order. It is gratifying to see the vibrant world of virtual art at last getting mainstream attention. Be sure to read the many comments the article has received - lots of info and debate!

"When I was a child, I kept an aquarium and I would stare into it for hours, mesmerized by it then as I am now by Second Life, a magical weightless world populated by strange and beautiful creatures." These memories were the inspiration behind the creation of "Acquarella." An aquarium on a cosmic scale, "Acquarella" is filled with swaying, lacey aquatic plants, schools of neon tetras, animated angelfish and goldfish, drifts of diatoms, and huge green lily pads that bob up and down in the invisible current. The build echoes with the songs of whales. Pose balls invite people to swim to their music, and throughout, there are traces of an untold story. A fragment of a submarine that torpedoed itself hints at an apocalyptic destruction that could possibly be a metaphor. Who is hunting whom with those ghostly sonar pings? Why does color sometimes creep into a largely monochrome vision? How to explain the fact that the black and white tetras school, while their rainbow-hued counterparts are solitary? Who is Acquarella? Is she a giantess or are we liliputian? People are invited to submit their own back stories via in-world notecard to Alizarin Goldflake or by leaving your story here in the comment box under this post. A panel of 3 judges will choose the most creative story, which will be published via an Art & Artists Network! group notice and will receive a L$1,500 prize on December 28.

There will be champagne and hors d'oeuvres for the realistically-inclined and salsa dancing to the energizing jazz flamenco land music. A careful search of the build will yield a freebie containing one of the exquisite digital drawings.

"Acquarella" employs highly-detailed digital drawings done with Corel Painter software and a Wacom tablet. It uses scripts, animations, and sounds to provide an immersive art experience that is intended to create visual and psychic pleasure for the participant.

AOM in Orfeo: The Photos

Here are four photos of yesterday's performance by the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse in my immersive art build "Orfeo's Oratorio." It was an outstanding performance of truly experiemental music produced by virtual instruments created and played real time by the musicians. The four pieces showed a broad range of accomplishment, and the other-worldly mysterious sounds held the audience's rapt attention for over an hour, quite an achievement in the fast-paced SL enviroment. I hope to host another performance of the AOM, possibly for New Year's.

Orfeo’s Oratorio is a virtual amusement park with an Upper World/Underworld theme, featuring other-worldly fountains, gondolas, coracles, dance pose balls, a mirror-like floor, blue-jetted ferris wheels, and a mysterious changing light. In the Underworld, where the performance will take place, flames shoot up from the floor, sconces crackle, and the fountain drips particle sparks from the ceiling like a giant chandelier. From October 9 to 14 ORFEO will be included in the IMAGINE Festival produced by the Imagine Network on the mega-sim new UTSA campus. The theme of the Festival is "the future of weather," and the festival sim is divided into four islands representing the four seasons. SL's finest artists are installing their futuristic visions of the weather for each season. ORFEO, with its day/night, life/death , Upper World/Underworld theme, functions as the bridge between the seasons.

Opening on Friday October 9th, 2009 (John Lennon's birthday) at noon SLT.

On September 20th, Orfeo opened on NMC's Ars Simulacra island, which is devoted to exhibitions of the work of performing and creative artists of Second Life. Tayzia Abattoir is the curator of Ars. Music was provided by Joaquin Gustav. This is my largest, most detailed SL build to date, and to have it showing at Ars is a very proud moment for me.

On August 1 Atelier Alizarin, my Second Life studio, moved to a sim called Lie. It is gorgeous mountainous land on a Linden highway along the ocean, somewhat reminiscent of California's Big Sur. An original mainland sim on an up-to-date server, the fabulous land textures, abundance of open space, and elegant builds make it a visual treat. The land includes a small water access near the highway for those who might like to put a boat in and sail new seas.

Atelier Alizarin attractions include:
**a very large interactive immersive art installation called Orfeo's Oratorio, loosely based on the idea of a cosmic amusement park (an NPIRL pick)
**immersive art and musical kinetics in Sky Studio Day and Sky Studio Night

Acquarella at Kelly Yap Gallery: the WATER show

I have work in WATER, a group show at Kelly Yap Art Gallery, which runs from June 26 to August 15, 2009. The Opening wil be Saturday, July 4, at 5pm SLT, featuring DJ Eifachfilm Vacirca. Fireworks at 6:30!

Join us for a 4th of July celebration and take in this incredibly inventive show of some of SL's best artists' interpretations of the theme. Be sure to notice the completely redesigned gallery, a work of art in itself.

My piece is called "Acquarella" and is installed on the roof. TP or fly up or take the elevator to the fourth floor. It is populated with moving goldfish, angelfish, and neon tetras - take one of the three pose balls and swim with the fish! Notice the lily pads gently bobbing in the water and the weeds waving in the SL wind. Everything in this build is a digital drawing done by hand with Corel Painter.

Over 100 Opensim regions wiped in weekend virtualization exploit

Hypergrid Business is reporting that an unknown person or persons destroyed a large number of OpenSim regions over the weekend, by exploiting a weakness in LxLabs' Linux-based HyperVM management software. OpenSim is a popular third-party reverse-engineered implementation of Linden Lab's Second Life server software used in a variety of commercial, non-commercial and educational virtual-environment grids.
More than 100 regions are reported lost, along with any data that wasn't backed up off-site. Apparently more than just the simulators were taken down, Web-pages and other ancillary data and files on the affected servers were also lost in the attack.
OpenSim regions using virtualization software other than LxLabs' HyperVM were unaffected. The attack hit more than just third-party Second Life compatible grids, however, as more than 100,000 other websites and servers were wiped over the weekend using the software exploit.
In the wake of the attacks and massive data-loss, LxLabs' founder, K T Ligesh (32) allegedly committed suicide in his Bangalore home on Monday.

An immersive art environment, this build is a virtual amusement park with an Upper World/Under World theme. The centerpiece of the upper level is an other-worldly fountain. Two-person steerable gondolas and 1-person fixed-path coracles play the role of bumper cars. The coracles swing the rider into space outside the build, and the view back in is spectacular. There are dance pose balls and, in a corner, a Circle of Confusion, a round table and seating with a perpetual party going on. A quote from the end of Dante's "Inferno" periodically drifts up and out through a circular opening in the roof. The floor is of particular interest. Its texture of black and transparent squares creates the illusion of a mirror-like reflection that, along with the columns and arches, lends a Venetian atmosphere. Viewers will also want to notice how the light changes from day to night along the walls.

Two blue-jetted ferris wheels connect the Upper World to the Underworld, which is an upsidedown version of the former. Hot oranges and purples replace the cool blue colors of the Upper World, and the Salsa Inferna pose balls dance the avatars on the ceiling. The underworld coracle is ringed with fire, and particle flames shoots up from the floor. A set of flaming sconces lights up either end, and the Underworld version of the fountain hangs from the ceiling, dripping particle sparks like a giant chandelier. Another quote from the Inferno sinks slowly through the floor. And a single ferris wheel connects the rider to the Outside World, where the view from underneath is also spectacular.

Jeran42 Claxton of the Builder's Brewery Group has just set an in-world scultpy texture maker out as a freebie at the Builder's Brewery store:

It consists of 64 points which you arrange to make your shape, and then it converts the points to a colored HUD which you take a screen shot of. You edit the screen shot in Photoshop and import it as a sculpty texture. TY Jeran!

Accomplished SL artists Alizarin Goldflake and Flivelwitz Alsop combine their talents in a sparkling new show of kinetic 2-D sculptures each with unique music. The series was inspired by the art and music of five Asian countries: China, Japan, India, Tibet, and Mongolia. Come feast your eyes on Alizarin's scintillating animated textures and amaze your ears with Flivel's complex compositions - hard to believe they were all created with the little 10 second loops that SL allows! Walk up close to each piece to activate the music.
